The Africa Budget Project (ABP) is part of the Economic Governance Programme and the regional partner of the International Budget Project (IBP), located at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in
. The ABP works to build capacity in civil society and legislatures to participate effectively in budgetary processes in African countries. We are strategically placed to utilize the demand for applied budget work and nurture strong budget organizations that can effectively engage with budgetary issues.
Over the past few years, the ABP has introduced more than 220 organisations across Africa to budget work. While the ABP initially focused on building organisations in Anglophone Africa (such as Ghana, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, etc), it has started working with organisations in several French-speaking African countries (such as Burkina Faso, Senegal, Chad, Niger, Rwanda, Ivory Coast etc.) and Portuguese speaking countries (Mozambique and Angola). In several cases the organisations that the ABP has worked with have established or are in the process of establishing units dedicated to budget work. The ABP has also supported parliamentarians and parliamentary staff in Nigeria, Zambia, Niger and Malawi. Budget work is growing fast in Africa and the ABP s efforts have led to the development of a core group of African budget groups.
